Abstract

This paper reviews 32 papers or commentaries published in Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing in 2016, within the field of respiration. Papers were published covering airway management, ventilation and respiratory rate monitoring, lung mechanics and gas exchange monitoring, in vitro monitoring of lung mechanics, CO2 monitoring, and respiratory and metabolic monitoring techniques.

The articles include uses of tremoflo products or describes research devices that may not have been cleared by FDA

The effect of matching donor and lung transplant (LTx) recipient lung volumes on LTx outcomes is unknown. The Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) is a simple measure of the mechanical properties of the respiratory system. We have recently developed novel measures of airway closure using FOT. This study aims to assess the effect of matching donor and recipient lung volumes on respiratory system mechanics using FOT.

Effects of Donor Smoking History on Early Post-Transplant Lung Function Measured by Oscillometry
Oscillometry (Osc) is a non-invasive test of respiratory impedance that is sensitive to small airways, a region not well characterized by conventional pulmonary function tests (PFT). It has been shown to detect early COPD prior to changes in PFT. We posit that Osc could identify small airway obstruction post-lung transplant (LTx) and discriminate between lungs from smoking vs non-smoking donors.

Calling Time on Spirometry: Unlocking the Silent Zone in Acute Rejection after Lung Transplantation
Lung transplantation is the only effective treatment for patients with end-stage lung disease, yet median survival is only 6 years and significantly shorter than that observed with other solid-organ transplants (1). Acute cellular rejection (ACR) causing graft failure is the major cause of death in the first year, and is also a risk factor for chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) (2).
