The ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is increasingly affecting our communities, work and personal lives. With the following update, we would like to provide important information regarding the use of THORASYS products and services in the context of COVID-19 to our clients and the pulmonary medical community.
Normal Availability of Products and Services
THORASYS firmly supports and decisively implements the preventive measures prescribed or recommended by health authorities in the countries we operate in. Wherever possible, our staff is working from the home office, and a range of protective measures have been put in place at our offices to ensure the safely of those employees whose position require work at our office, including special handling procedures for inbound and outbound shipments as well as during the manufacturing of our products. Thanks to our modern IT infrastructure, these changes should be transparent to our users, and all services including customer service and technical support remain available as usual.
Safe Use of THORASYS Products
At this time, patients carrying the SARS-CoV-2 virus will likely be encountered in many environments where THORASYS products are used, therefore the safe usage procedures are paramount to prevent patient-to-patient transmission. The ClearFlo bacterial/viral filters that are typically used with our tremoflo Airwave Oscillometry systems have been demonstrated to provide a 99.998% filtration efficiency for Phi X 174 bacteriophages with a diameter of 25-27 nm, which is substantially smaller than SARS-CoV-2 (around 120 nm). Although patients do not normally come in contact with the tremoflo device, instructions and procedures to rapidly disinfect all tremoflo surfaces between patients are also available.
High-risk Asthma and COPD Patients
Patients suffering from pre-existing obstructive lung diseases such as Asthma and COPD are always at risk of virally triggered exacerbations. If these patients contract COVID-19, they likely have an exceptionally high risk for a more severe disease progression. The tremoflo Airwave Oscillometry system is excellently suited to preventively monitor lung health, for example in confirmed Asthma or COPD patient who have been isolated due to possible exposure to the coronavirus.
Can Oscillometry help manage COVID-19 Patients?
The utility of Oscillometry in infectious diseases is unclear. To the best of our knowledge, there are no recent studies, though a small number of early Oscillometry publications decades ago showed promising initial results. THORASYS is ready to support studies in this area, and we encourage interested parties to contact us for details.
